Dr. Shivangini Tandon is currently working as an Associate Professor in the Department of History, Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh (India). Her research interests include Early modern South Asian history, Feminist theory, Biographical literature and questions of Culture and Language. She did her graduation and post-graduation in History from St. Stephen’s College, University of Delhi and MPHIL and PhD in History from the University of Delhi, Delhi (India). She was the Delhi University topper at the post graduate level. She has taught briefly in St. Stephen’s College, Kirori Mal and Gargi College, Delhi University.
She is the recipient of Max Planck India Mobility Grant, Berlin (2016-2022) and a former visiting fellow at the Centre For the History of Emotions, Max Planck Institute for Human Development, Berlin (Germany). She is also the recipient of the Grant for a Bilateral Research Project jointly funded by Japanese Society for the Promotion of Science & Indian Council of Social Science Research, JSPS-ICSSR (April, 2016-March, 2018) titled ‘Ideas of Food and Body in South Asia: Analyses of Cookbooks from the Medieval Times to the Present’. Her recent book titled Life Stories in Mughal India: Indo-Persian Biographies; 16th to 18th centuries is published by Routledge: Taylor & Francis, UK. She is the co-editor of another book titled Making the ‘Woman’: Discourses of Gender in 18th-19th century India which is also being published by Routledge: Taylor & Francis group, UK.
She has been invited to many national and international forums as a speaker. Her articles and book reviews have been published in journals like the Indian Historical Review (IHR), Journal of South Asian History & Culture, Social Scientist and as part of Occasional Paper Series by Nehru Memorial Museum and Library, New Delhi, The Book Review Literary Journal and Biblio. Her research papers have also been published recently in edited volumes by Peter Lang: New York, Orient BlackSwan: New Delhi and Routledge: London.
She has also been the recipient of prestigious fellowships/scholarships and awards like the Sanwa Bank Scholarship, Jawaharlal Nehru scholarship for doctoral studies, ICHR foreign travel grant and the Sir Syed Innovation Award. She was interviewed by the BBC on Nur Jahan for their documentary titled ‘World made by Women’ in 2015 and again in 2018 for a talk show on Mughal princesses.
